It was ever thus. In about 1968 there was an article in It magazine (no, not IT, that was called DP, this was just "It") titled "The Workless Society".
And pretty much since then one way and anothre I've been making a living from automating other people's jobs.
Then and now it involves a basic misunderstanding of why we work. Work changes, jobs change, the need to work to survive reduces, but we still work as hard as ever. It's about competition, not survival.
We moved the jobs from agriculture to manufacturing to financial services. Which goes to show that if the jobs don't exist we will invent them.
