It seems the real problem is this assumption itself. Actually everyone in an IT field that I know of has more business sense than their manager. They are all incredibly pragmatic. And not many are all that keen to fall into the same political traps that their managers do.
The fact is management needs to grow up. And stop merely assuming that techies dont know what is going on.
