Personally, I would not advise kids in the US to enter IT. I believe having good technical skills is important, but the most important thing is to be a quick learner, an excellent problem solver,and to have excellent communication skills.

Flexibility, not a specific job, will grant the best opportunities in the future --- keep in mind that opportunity does not mean certainty.
