I teleworked for 6 years prior to starting my MBA last year and it was an essential work structure for my daily routine. I am now writing a research paper on teleworking management decision-making processes.
It is true that the personal benefits of teleworking can be immense and it is good to hear of firms embracing this practice. The issues of teleworking are ones of management not function. Technology has removed many of the barriers which had previously restrained opportunity and it is true that with the right people and attitudes the practices can be adopted fairly easily, but care needs to be taken by the individual and manager of the negative elements of teleworking. Home-life encroachment, poor work allocation and review by managers and disenfranchised workers are among the key problem areas.
Employers embracing the practice is not enough to make it successful, the positive attitudes need to be accompanied by good planning and training for the managers who possibly need a different skill set to be successful.
