I think this is a very good article and covers the subject of ageism.
I am 60 years old with over 40 years experience in telecommunications and IT, but I cannot get a job in the UK. I have not had a day off work for years, and I now work abroad working 10 to 12 hour days 6 days a week, so I think I blow the myth on the older generation having more time off through illness my experience is that it is the other way round the younger generation seem to take time off for a headache. What can I offer, experience, knowledge, skills both old and new, I can share these attributes in technology management, business management, financial management, commercial management, managing multi-skilled, multi-cultured teams and self discipline. All this I am willing to pass on to the younger generations in the hope that it will make them a better manager, and a greater asset to their organisation. Why doesn't anyone take advantage of this wealth of untapped knowledge? Yes I want a decent salary in line with everyone else, but I also want to opportunity to pass on my knowledge and my skills as I think it is the greatest gift the older generation can pass on. It is enough that have had to suffer the indignaty of falling from Director level to Engineer level due to my age and as a result of ageism within my own country I have been cast out.
