Virtual collaboration is in its infancy. The tools available today are pioneering but preliminary - browser based solutions are not great tools for collaborating on files that typically sit on local file systems, for example. The winners will be those collaboration tools that are most closely aligned with how we already work today. Most professionals are already trained in and dependant upon a certain set of tools, such as Excel or Photoshop, and so providers of collaboration tools need to accept these as part of the landscape. Providers also need to offer more than point solutions. They need to think hard about the contexts in which collaboration occurs, and is most effective, and then build out a set of tools that fully enable collaboration within that context.
