SchlumbergerSema will be unveiled tomorrow as the first supplier to be awarded one of the contracts central to the government's ambitious £2.3bn NHS IT modernisation project.
Along with Cerner, the firm will be responsible for building and running a national electronic booking system that will be used by doctors and patients for booking appointments.
Richard Granger, director of the NHS IT programme – who was named as one of silicon.com's top 50 Agenda Setters for 2003 – will formally announce the details on Wednesday morning.
Getting the first major project underway will be a huge relief for Granger following criticism of the pace and secrecy of the programme in recent weeks and the withdrawal of major US supplier Lockheed Martin from the bidding for the patient record scheme.
