The Department for Education and Employment (DfEE) has launched 25 education action zones which it is hoped will boost educational IT investment across the UK. A £75m cash injection made up of public and private sector funding will be distributed to local education authorities, allowing them to modernise school resources. Businesses including American Express, BT, Bull Information Systems, Nissan, Rolls Royce and Shell will also be offering training and experience to schools in local areas. Plans include the development of a pupil smartcard project and interactive homeworking in Barnsley, IT access outside school hours in Brighton and fast-track IT training in Croydon.
