Bupa has chosen Oracle to supply databases for its core business applications. Bupa's IS director, Uwe Natho, said Oracle's main advantage over its rivals is the scalability of its products.
Oracle will initially provide Bupa's customer call centre with Oracle7 databases on Unix and Windows NT platforms. Upgrades to Oracle8, which offers a new, Java-based architecture, are under consideration. Oracle will provide three years' international support for Bupa as part of the deal.
Financial details of the contract were not disclosed, but an Oracle spokesperson said it was "fairly considerable".
It will take one year to roll out the contract in full. Bupa added that existing systems and licenses would have to be converted, and Silver, Oracle's 24 hour telephone support service, would be put into place.
