The UK Prime Minister has chosen healthcare monitoring over IT investment for the National Health Service.
Speaking at the NHS 50th anniversary celebrations, Tony Blair talked of the "scandal of Bristol", when 27 children died during heart surgery, as "an unforgivable failure to act on the signs of poor performance".
As a result, government funds will be directed towards monitoring the performance of doctors, nurses, drugs, hospitals, NHS Trusts and even the NHS chief executive. New regulations will make this information publicly available.
Information management within the healthcare sector came lower on Blair's list of priorities. Technology links between GPs and hospitals, and same-day test results, will not happen until after 2000, when the telephone-based nursing service, NHS Direct, goes nationwide.
Full details of NHS investment will be disclosed in two weeks' time as part of the UK government's Comprehensive Spending Review.
