The UK's largest union, Unison, claims laptops can effect users' physical health.
A survey by the trade union of 500 careers advisors showed that 61 per cent complained of back pain, 68 per cent suffered eye strain, and nearly half were concerned about the risk of assault.
Sandra Howells, assistant national officer for local government at Unison, said physical problems occur when users carry around heavy portables.
"Employers need to take responsibility and advise their workers as to what the damage can be," said Howell. "We have sent our findings to the Health and Safety Executive and they are due to carry out a more in depth analysis," she added.
A spokeswoman for the Health and Safety Executive confirmed it will be looking into the use of laptops in business. Guidelines produced by Unison advise users to use carrying aids to help with the weight, take regular breaks and get some training to learn safe lifting and handling techniques.
