Health managers could waste telemedicine money

The UK Prime Minster's recent pledge to fund IT innovation in the NHS has met with criticism from top health body, the Institute of Health Services Management.

The Institute's technology group chairman, Mik Horswell, warned that throwing money at IT development without appropriate strategies will increase work and disrupt the health service.

Horswell was referring to a recent dearth of private sector projects and public funding devoted to telemedicine and telecare. The announcements - including the launch of a £14m nursing call centre - were made to mark the 50th anniversary of the NHS.

Horswell added: "Projects must make strategic sense within the wider NHS IT infrastructure and shouldn't be backed by the government because they're glamorous and glossy."

He warned that IT investment projects must not be managed by "ad hoc enthusiastic clinicians or technophile managers".

The Department of Health was unavailable for comment.
