Microsoft has filed a countersuit against the 20 US states whose charges of anti-competitive practices are currently occupying the software giant's legal team.
In its first formal response to the lawsuits, Microsoft claimed the allegations were "completely groundless". It added that the actions of the states "unconstitutionally undermine the company's intellectual property rights."
The company also issued a detailed legal rebuttal to all the charges. It claimed that plans to integrate the Windows operating system with the Internet Explorer browser were in place long before Netscape even existed and that Explorer gained popularity because of its "superior technology".
US government allegations that Microsoft entered into exclusionary contracts with Internet service providers were also strongly denied by the software company, as were suggestions that it prevented PC vendors from altering the Windows start up screen so that only the Windows logo was shown.
Microsoft said it would publish a more detailed response in time for the next filing deadline of 10 August.
