Corel is to make extensive back payments to Unisys for the unauthorised use of a patented graphics technology. In an out-of-court settlement announced yesterday, Corel also agreed to start paying Unisys regular license fees.
The Unisys technology in question, Lempel Ziv Welch (LZW), is used to compress and decompress GIF images on the Web. It is the basis of a wide range of computer software, including Corel Draw and other Corel software. LZW also forms part of Adobe's Portable Document Format (PDF), Postscript-2 and some Tiff graphic files.
Unisys filed the patent infringement suit against Corel at a US District Court in East Virginia. Details of the settlement were not disclosed, but financial compensation could date back to January 1995, when Unisys started its worldwide licensing initiative.
