One of the world's first telesurgery operations has been successfully completed in Baltimore - by doctors over 200 miles away in New York.
The telesurgery was conducted over a global ISDN (GISDN) network donated by US telecoms company AT&T. The network linked doctors at the World Congress of Eudorourology Conference in New York with the surgical team in Baltimore. Another 1,100 were able to link up from the conference centre to witness the operation.
Doctors transmitted video and audio information over the network to operate a laparoscope - a miniature camera that goes inside the body - which allowed them to instruct a robot to complete the operation.
