GEC's medical electronics subsidiary, Picker International, has acquired Israeli healthcare equipment manufacturer Elscint in a deal worth £167m.
Elscint makes computed tomography equipment, which uses electronic imaging to provide graphics for use in medical procedures.
Managing director, Lord Simpson, said the deal reflects GEC's commitment towards medical imaging, which he considers to be a key growth market.
Picker representatives said Elscint's strong background in research and development will be continued. They also noted that Elscint's agreement to provide components for Siemens Medical Systems - a competing medical equipment manufacturer - will be upheld.
