Dr John Reid, UK minister for transport, is to investigate EC (European Commission) proposals for a European satellite system, which could create up to 2,000 permanent jobs across Europe.
Known as Galileo, the system will provide accurate positioning for transport, industry and agriculture. The EC claims it will comprise of between 24 and 45 satellites and will cost in the region of £2bn (E3bn).
The Department for the Environment, Transport and the Regions is starting a consultation and will be seeking views form the UK transport sector.
