Citizens in England and Wales might soon be able to register births, deaths and marriages online if plans to modernise the registration service go ahead.
The Office for National Statistics has launched a consultation document aimed to be the first stage in the modernisation process.
The document, 'Registration: Modernising a Vital Service', also calls for national standards in the conduct and content of civil marriages and to further relax the rules on the location of civil marriages.
It also questioned whether additional services such as "baby naming ceremonies" should be offered.
