Health Authority to get £1m VPN from Telewest

Telewest has won a £1m contract to supply and manage a virtual private data network (VPN) for Bradford Health Authority.

The VPN will span hospitals, health centres, GP surgeries and trusts in the Bradford area to allow all primary care groups to share clinical information. It will also provide them with email and Internet access services.

The technology at the heart of the project is Telewest's Enterprise Connect secure router service which uses a frame relay network via permanent 128K or 2Mb circuits.

Telewest has already demonstrated the VPN in a live demonstration overseen by the secretary of state for health, Frank Dobson.

Bradford Health Authority's IT manager, Tony Megaw, said Telewest was chosen partly because it was able to roll out the project quickly.
