A coalition of Web-based pharmaceutical companies, government officials and medical associations gathered in Washington this week to develop a framework to protect consumers buying drugs online.
It follows growing concern in the industry that the Web is allowing the uncontrolled distribution and purchase of medicines. The goal was to set out the future of online pharmacies and establish a clear and safe system for the use of prescriptions and medicine dispensing online.
The first steps include the setting up of an evaluation project to assess exactly how the internet is effecting the sector. The group also intend to develop a national education programme advising consumers as to the dangers of unauthorised medicine purchasing.
The intention is also to collaborate with every element of the healthcare sector to ensure a coordinated approach.
The summit was hosted by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy and information can be obtained by contacting jteplitz@nabp.com
