The UK Data Protection Act will be in force by 1 March, according to the Home Office.

The first seven draft statutory instruments will be put before Parliament next week, indicating that the government is on track for its target implementation date. A total of 17 statutory instruments will be needed before the law - passed in 1998 - can go into effect.

The draft regulation suggests that the fee for registering with the Data Protection Registrar will be raised to £35 per year, up from the £25 per year fee that was set in 1991.

A draft of the data protection regulations has been posted on the Home Office site at http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/ccpd/dpsis.htm .
