NHS Direct under fire

By Polly Raymond

Published: 2 March 2000 14:31 GMT

The UK Department of Health (DoH) will today respond to complaints that it is leaving critically ill patients unattended, by announcing details of a review of its out-of-hours services.

The recently introduced NHS Direct service - a call centre staffed by trained medical personnel who offer medical advice via the phone - is among the schemes in the firing line.

The review will determine whether the call centre is an appropriate first port of call following complaints that patients were left waiting hours for treatment.
