doctors.net.uk to expand medical alert operations

Online medical community, doctors.net.uk, is in discussions with the Department of Health (DoH) to expand its service to cover standard medical alerts.

After an unofficial trial of the new service, doctors.net.uk claims to have received such a positive response from 25,000 General Medical council members it is talking to the DoH about formalising the arrangements.

Usually the DoH responds to Committee of Safety of Medicines (CSM) alerts by sending out faxes to doctors when news breaks. doctors.net.uk responded unofficially to an alert on 29 February and distributed the information to its subscribers before the official faxes had reached them.

If the arrangement is formalised, doctors.net.uk said it will provide the service to the DoH free of charge.

According to doctors.net.uk, one-quarter of UK doctors use their free information service.
