Barnsley police fight crime with hybrid Dolphin device

South Yorkshire Police has been armed with the latest mobile technology in order to catch criminals.

Officers in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, are now using Dolphin's ExpressNet service via an all-in-one digital radio and mobile phone handset.

The ExpressNet equipment uses digital TETRA technology which prevents illegal monitoring of police radio. In the past, suspects have avoided arrest by listening in to analogue radio communications.

The technology used is well suited for emergency services and has already led to one successful arrest, the force claimed.

Dolphin is owned by TIW which is one of six companies bidding for the UK UMTS licences.
