Seventy per cent of internet users don't trust online retailers to keep credit card details secure and almost half believe online retailers themselves would 'purposefully defraud' them.

The findings, which suggest ecommerce still has much to overcome, are from a survey carried out by NOP on behalf of secure payment company Magex, backed by NatWest and the Royal Bank of Scotland.
However, the report argues there is a lack of consistency in consumer's fears as a third of 18 to 35 year olds would rather give their credit details out over the phone or lose sight of their card in a bar or restaurant than complete a transaction over the internet.
Magex claims it has the answer to the distrust - providing a virtual wallet that would enable customers to only reveal their credit card details to the bank.
Another option however, would be to put your signature on silicon.com's Back the Act petition to encourage better reinforcement of Data protection rights and restore confidence in the technology.
