Gore blimey, Serf's up for Al

Al Gore, the man who once claimed to have played a major part in the creation of the internet has won the backing of the man who has a much stronger claim to the title 'internet inventor', Vinton Serf.

Serf's endorsement brings the number of high-tech leaders who have backed Gore's campaign to 420, according to aides. Others in the pro-Gore camp include Netscape founder Marc Andreessen and Apple CEO Steve Jobs.

The US presidential hopeful made his original boast when he was number two to Bill Clinton. Despite a more recent acknowledgements that he may have exaggerated his role, industry watchers say he did play a crucial part in increasing funding for federal research on the web.

Currently senior vice-president at Worldcom, Serf developed key internet technologies during his time at the US Department of Defence's Advanced Research Projects Agency.
