With an advertised salary of £120,000, the job may pay nearly a million pounds less than the England football manager's position, but it's certainly attracting more applicants.
Two current members of Allan's staff - Richard Barrington and Ann Steward - are in the running. IT director and ebusiness evangelist Rene Carayol has entered the race, as has Ecademy founder Thomas Power. Also in line are two favourites from the first round of applications: Jim Norton of the IoD (Institute of Directors) and Margaret Smith from Legal & General. Both lost out to Allan last year, but a more focussed job specification may tempt them to apply again.
Smith, director of ecommerce at Legal & General, hasn't confirmed that she'll apply this time around, but she concedes the job description is more appealing.
Smith said: "The advert is much better than two years ago - it looks like the government has learned a lot from its experience with Allan. It was hazy two years ago - just saying 'go out and evangelise' - a difficult job to do. This time it's much more about delivery. It sets concrete targets."
