Out will go the Planet Britain 2000 site, which 'offers a wealth of information about the many attractions and opportunities Britain has to offer young people from around the world.' These attractions include an invitation to 'explore the Seychelles' and an in-depth article on tartan.

In will come new, and hopefully improved, content and a network of access points in UK embassies and consulates around the world, offering access to people without internet connections. And these local access points will have local language capabilities.

The new system will also contain online forms for visa applications and education admission.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "This is an important step for us in ensuring that we are using the most up-to-date tools available to promote Britain overseas."

The contract to build and maintain the new portal and ancillary network will initially run for three years. Logica's partners in the project are Sun and Bates Interactive.
