Government puts hatches and dispatches online

The UK government today unveiled the first range of services in its Citizen Portal, part of the its plans to put every government service online by 2005.

Cabinet office minister Ian McCartney officially launched a raft of new features for the government's http://www.ukonline.gov.uk website.

The services launched today are purely informational, rather than transactional. For example, the LifeEvents service allows users to find information about making a will or registering births and deaths - though there is no actual service which enables users to do any of these things online as yet.

Other new developments, making their debut today, include a search engine, a discussion forum and a personalisation feature.

The services have been available in a trial version for some time and have already attracted eight million hits.

A Conservative Party spokesman dismissed the site as "using taxpayers money for party political propaganda." Though he welcomed certain elements of the portal he refused to say how the service would look under a Conservative government.

The site was developed in collaboration with Syntegra, the systems integration and consulting business of BT.
