Education and employment secretary David Blunkett announced yesterday that 1,200 UK online centres were launched yesterday, with a further 1,050 planned in the near future.

The centres have been and will be set up via £252m investment from the Capital Modernisation Fund with additional monies set aside by the Department of Education and Employment (DfEE) to meet the operating costs of the centres.

The Government is hoping to address certain areas of the population which have little or no access to the internet, including older citizens, people from ethnic minorities and semi-skilled and unskilled people.

A survey conducted by the DfEE found that just 22 per cent semi-skilled and unskilled people had used the internet, compared to 68 per cent of professionals.

The launch of the centres coincides with the launch of a DfEE website covering job and training opportunities.
