The next round of Microsoft's long-running US anti-trust case is set to take place on 21 September after the new judge assigned to case made it clear any action against the Seattle giant will be taken sooner rather than later.

Lawyers now have two weeks to present written arguments. The news comes on the day that European regulators have stepped up discussions on bringing the Redmond behemoth to justice on this side of the Atlantic.

The European case concentrates on the server market where competitors and business users complain Microsoft has achieved an unfair advantage due to its dominance in the desktop OS sector.

According to the San Jose Mercury, the European Commission has received complaints claiming that in order to run Windows 2000 effectively on PCs users were forced to buy Windows 2000 for servers.
