An FBI terrorism task force has been accused by Muslim leaders of instigating an anti-Muslim witch-hunt after a raid that led to the temporary closure of 500 Muslim websites.

The FBI denies the accusation, stating it was under the orders of an unspecified federal search warrant in the Texas offices of InfoCom Corporation - a company that hosts many Arabic websites.

A team of 80 agents raided the privately held InfoCom in Dallas last Wednesday and shut down 500 of its hosted websites temporarily while information was copied from internet servers.

Among those under InfoCom's care is the site run by Al-Jazeera television, commonly known as the Arab-CNN, a key regional news source for Arabic speakers.

Also shut down was the site for Arabic newspaper Al-Sharq, based with Al-Jazeera in the Gulf state of Qatar.

American Muslims are angry about the raid, and view it as another case of the pro-Israeli lobby attempting to intimidate Palestinian supporters.
