The FBI has identified some of the most illusive hackers in the US after an 18 month undercover operation which resulted in the arrest of teenage hacker Mafiaboy.
More than 70 FBI and Pentagon investigators posed as hackers and carried out a dozen authorised defacements of government websites during the operation, according to a report on US newswire Computerworld.
The US Justice Department claims it has launched dozens of investigations, based on information gathered by the FBI infiltrators, one of which led to the arrest of Mafiaboy.
The covert operation began as a defence department project to identitfy pro-Serbian hackers during the 1999 bombing campaign.
