The NHS is to set up an IT helpdesk for staff struggling to come to terms with its computers.

The NHS Information Authority - the body responsible for overseeing the computerisation of the health service - expects up to one million employees to call the line for guidance on IT issues.

The helpdesk, provisionally named NHS Red, is expected to be in place by October at a cost of £450,000.

The authority also said it would fund software upgrades which will allow laboratories to send test results directly to doctors' computers.
