Administrators called in, but is it just posturing?
Published: 27 March 2002 13:16 GMT
Ailing pay-TV firm ITV Digital has applied to go into administration after a failure to reach an agreement with the Nationwide League over the cost of screening live matches.
ITV Digital angered football club chairmen by asking to renegotiate its £315m TV rights package. Despite running the risk of losing everything if ITV Digital goes bust, the chairmen took the principled stand of refusing any lesser deal.
However, critics of ITV Digital may now suggest the latest twist in its sorry tale is merely posturing and the company is just calling the bluff of the Nationwide League.
The Nationwide League has said it will accept £90m of the £180m still outstanding, giving ITV Digital the option to renegotiate the payment of the remaining £90m. However, ITV Digital is standing by its original statement that it can only afford to pay £50m.
