Fewer websites are using cookies to collect personal information from surfers, according to the latest research.
A survey by the Progress and Freedom Foundation (PFF) found that 84 of the 100 busiest websites in 2001 collected personal information by using cookies. The figure for the previous year was 96.
The study discovered that site owners have cut their use of cookies because the data collected is often not all that useful. The negative reactions from consumers and privacy advocates have also played a part.
Many sites have improved the ways they are displaying their privacy policies, the report concluded. The sites surveyed included major websites such as Amazon, eBay and Yahoo!.
