Edmonds takes on role at NHS Direct

He should be able to offer advice on which phone and internet providers to use

Former director-general of telecoms watchdog Oftel David Edmonds has been made chair of the NHS Direct Special Health Authority.

The appointment comes from Health Minister Rosie Winterton and follows Oftel being subsumed into uber-regulator Ofcom at the start of this year.

Edmonds will remain a member of the board of Ofcom for which he will receive an annual salary of £30,000.

He became Oftel DG in 1998. Before being a telecoms regulator he was MD Group Central Services at NatWest bank and chief executive of the Housing Association.

NHS Direct is telephone-based and with its online counterpart, NHS Direct Online, is the largest and – according to the Department of Health – most successful provider of e-healthcare in the world. Together they will be classified as a Special Health Authority in April this year, independent in nature but subject to ministerial direction.
