Capita has won an extension to its facilities management deal with Derby City to roll out the council's plans for e-government.
The deal is said to be worth £11.25m over the next four and a half years on top of its £6.3m 30-month contract signed last year. Capita IT Services originally won the contract to support and develop the council's core IT infrastructure in 1998.
A council spokesman said: "We want to become more customer focused and one thing that helps is technology. We are getting away from the traditional council with 8:30 to 5 o'clock opening."
Derby's plans are not yet final and Capita will be helping it to evaluate the technology available. Core to the project will be a CRM system complete with call centres.
The council is also looking at plans to establish kiosk in public places where people will be able to look up council information and fill in forms online.
The spokesman explained that it was also looking at projects that would allow the use of home digital TVs and PCs to access council information and fill in forms.
Capita Software Services is currently designing and developing a customer contract centre for Carlisle, based around its own CRM and e-government solution.
The Capita Group, which runs London's congestion charging scheme, today announced half year profits up 23 per cent to £69.1m and turnover up 17 per cent to £620m.
