The Home Office has ditched Siemens Business Services (SBS) in favour of Atos Origin in a new £200m deal for immigration IT.

The Immigration and Nationality Directorate's (IND) existing contract with SBS ends in November and Atos Origin will take over responsibility for IT infrastructure development and support for 8,000 users in a six-year deal.

SBS has had a somewhat patchy record with the IND and the government laid the blame for a backlog of visa applications on the German company's problems implementing a £77m PFI casework system. The system was finally ditched by then Home Secretary Jack Straw in 2001.

But the current Home Office minister, Des Browne, said in a statement: "I would like to thank the previous supplier SBS for the service they provided during the life-span of the previous contract and who have supported the business during a period of high activity."

Atos Origin successfully fought off competition from the other two final shortlisted bidders, SBS and Fujitsu.
