SeeBeyond has been awarded a 10-year contract by BT to provide support on the NHS care records service for London.

As the local service provider of the project, BT is responsible for designing and running a database that manages patient record applications and systems.

SeeBeyond will provide software that will integrate a number of disparate systems throughout London that currently have minimal connectivity. This will enable the delivery of a full summary of a patient's medical history wherever he or she is treated.

David Bennett, senior vice president and general manager at SeeBeyond, said in a statement: "By instituting a single view of the patient across the UK, [the NHS] will be the driving force behind the next generation in patient care. We are proud that SeeBeyond's technology has again been selected for such a momentous undertaking."

SeeBeyond and BT announced a previous contract in January 2004 to work on the NHS national programme for IT initiative. BT has reportedly missed deadlines on the project but both sides have confirmed that it's still going well.

In February 2004, the NHS awarded BT a major contract worth around £530m to run a nationwide broadband network.
