Local councils will meet the 2005 e-government deadline, according to one minister.

The deadline, which demands that all government agencies are e-enabled by the end of this year, will be met by 100 per cent of local authorities, local e-government minister Phil Hope said, and the move towards online government will save the government £1.2bn in efficiency savings by 2007/08.

Hope said yesterday local councils were making "good progress" on e-government.

According to a recent audit, the average local is now 79 per cent e-enabled. The report also found that 59 local councils had asked for help on implementation from Whitehall's e-government troubleshooter, the Implementation Support Unit.
