The CEO of OGCbuying.solutions, Hugh Barrett, is tipped to leave the organisation next year.
The purchasing arm of the government has confirmed Barrett could move on when his contract ends in June 2006.
A spokeswoman for OGCbuying.solutions said: "He has got the approval to stay on for an extra period. But he may return to the private sector for another big development challenge. Nothing has changed as yet."
Barrett signed a fixed-term contract when he joined the organisation three and a half years ago. At that time Sir Peter Gershon, who wrote the spending review that kick-started the government's efficiency drive, was the CEO of Office of Government Commerce (OGC), the parent organisation to OGCbuying.solutions.
OGCbuying.solutions' recent annual report showed that better management of government purchasing had saved taxpayers £321m on £2bn worth of deals, many of which were IT and telecoms contracts.
