You're half right, but you forgot the last half of the sentence:

If patent laws were applied the way the US wanted them, Microsoft could take people to court for providing a simple clock program for a pda. They recently obtained a patent for a software button that performs an second operation when held down as opposed to being pushed!

This 'innovation' should seem remarkably similar to anyone who's set the time on a digital watch.

Amazing the ease at which you can patent existing techniques ...
