Before even more money is wasted, I hope that this crazy ID scheme goes the way of the "Australia Card" - also proposed by a Labor government, in the 1980s.

The UK Government's ID card scheme can meet none of its stated aims, will be hugely expensive and will greatly damage our liberty.

All this just to grab some cheap headlines with the appearance of "being tough."
