It seems very unlikely that there could be a single point of view within such a large company as IBM on this subject. There are likely to be occasionally conflicting vested interests within IBM. One the one hand there will be departments concerned with promoting hardware and services supported on the back of open source, and who make a substantial contribution to the latter. On the other hand there will be departments concerned with maximising licensing revenue from intellectual property assets. The free licensing for use within free software of 500 patents suggests that the first group is getting stronger than the second. It doesn't imply that the second group has ceased to exist.
