3000 patent application/year, or more than 10 a day ! I really, really doubt that they have that many original ideas and suspect that a lot of these would fail if properly scrutinised. But once granted, it takes a fair amount of resource to defend against an accusation of infringment ...
Which demonstrates what is wrong with the patent system - it's far too easy for a big player to make mass applications and turn the world into a minefield for anyone without the clout to fight back.
