I agree - re-use is much better than recycle. I have recently bought an IBM X24 notebook from e-bay for £200 including base-unit - a great computer for less than the price of a dodgy new one. I'm going to pass on my old laptop to a friend who cannot afford one at all. Most of the energy in modern consumables goes into the production - keeping them alive makes a lot of sense. If only people existed who could repair more stuff economically...
Also, following the information in Will's Web Watch, I've signed up to Freecycle to get rid of a load of stuff that I'll never use, but might be useful to others.
