Cisco and UN team up to combat poverty

Cisco Systems and the United Nations (UN) Development Programme have joined forces to help combat poverty in the developing world - using the Internet.

A Web site - NetAid.org - will go live on 8 September as part of the NetAid initiative, and will allow people to make online donations. The UN hopes it will help bridge the gap between "the knows and the know-nots".

The two organisations also intend to ensure even the smallest villages in the developing world are connected to the Net.

NetAid is to make its worldwide debut on 9 October, with a number of rock concerts in New York, London and Geneva. Harvey Goldsmith, producer of 1985's Live Aid, will be among those organising the event which will include artists such as Celine Dion, George Michael, and Robbie Williams.
