The UK government has announced the preferred suppliers which will provide services through its central telecom procurement system.
The Government Telecommunications Contract will have 26 suppliers covering 15 areas, from telecoms and Internet access to mobile services. One of the most notable winners is BT which, until now, has not been favoured for government telecoms contracts. It is one of two companies that has been picked to provide services across all 15 areas.
The contracts are part of the government's Best Value policy where it uses its bulk buying capability to get better deals. Among the 26 suppliers are BTCellnet, Colt, CWC, EDS, Energis, ICL, MCI WorldCom, Sema Group and Vodafone.
