MoD attempts to wire up entire organisation

The Ministry of Defence is about to embark on its largest ever IT project as it opens discussions on procuring a system to connect the Army, Navy and Royal Airforce together.

Suppliers to the MoD have been issued with a bulletin asking them to attend a meeting on 26 July to talk about the system known as the Defence Information Infrastructure (DII).

DII is predicted to be worth over £450m each year over 10 years, in an ambitious project designed to get up to 300,000 users linked to the infrastructure.

The three armed services and the MoD will be linked together using secure digital connections within the business space of the department, not in the field.

DII will be designed using an internet protocol directory enabled tough network that will be connected by a wide area network.

The project idea was launched in October 2000.

No-one at the MoD was able to comment on the project.
